San Gimignano is one of my favourite places to visit in Italy. Located in Tuscany, the quaint walled old town is packed with history, traditional architecture, and is home to some of the most beautiful views I’ve ever seen.
I spent a couple of days in San Gimignano with my cousin when I was last visiting Italy. The town and it’s surrounding areas had such an impact on me that I’m dying to go back as soon as possible. Having spent plenty of time sightseeing in other Italian cities, it was nice to spend time by the pool, eat and drink, and simply take in the beautiful sights in a slow and relaxing pace.
With stunning churches, wineries, walking tracks, little boutiques and gift shops, San Gimignano is the perfect spot to spend a few days during your Italian travels.
Where to Stay
We stayed in a beautiful villa-styled hotel called Casolare Le Terre Rosse, which is located in heart of the Sienese Chianti area, about 5kms outside San Gimignano town. Staying outside the town meant we could experience the best of both worlds, explore the main areas and relax by the pool in the countryside.
Must Go-To Restaurant
Ristorante le Vecchie Mura was the most amazing restaurant I visited while in Italy, and yes that’s saying something! The food was divine, the wine, fabulous, and the price, incredibly affordable, but it was the views that really took our breath away. Sitting on the patio, you overlook the Tuscan countryside. It’s so, so beautiful and looks straight out of a movie. Boys if you want a good proposal spot in Italy, this is one to seriously consider.
Winery to Experience
Fattoria in San Donato is just across the road from Casolare Le Terre Rosse, and is a fabulous winery to visit for lunch. We were spoilt with a delicious antipasto platter and four bottles of different wines… yes it was heaven! After lunch and much wine drinking, we learnt how the wine was made on a tour of the winery.
San Gimignano is such a stunning little place in Italy and I highly recommend you book a trip there next time you’re visiting Italia!
