Summer is a time when you can have fun with fashion. You don’t have to hide your gorgeous outfits under an oversized coat, like you do in winter. You can finally show off what you’re wearing underneath without feeling the chill.
Summer generally consists of similar trends year, after year, with florals, bright colours and pale hues being the main contenders.
There’s something about vibrant, fun pieces that make you happy, so I’m a huge fan of these summer styles. I find they elevate your mood whenever you wear them. I guess it’s just like the sun, whenever those beautiful rays pop out, you can’t help but smile.
The only issue with bright, pop and heavily patterned pieces – they’re not hugely versatile.
These trends can be difficult to style for seasons to come and tend to stay packed away in your wardrobe for the following summer, or if you head off on holiday.
That’s why I love investing in neutral, minimalistic pieces. Think khaki, utilitarian, beige, earthy – A.K.A practical pieces that go with everything you own.
These pieces are timeless. You’ll be able to wear them season upon season, and hey, if they go with everything you already have in your wardrobe….they’re wonderful additions to your fashion repertoire.
Superdry is one brand which has been playing with this neutral vibe for summer 2017. Yes, they have their classic wow-factor colours and logo-licious pieces, but this season they’re also really paying attention to minimalism. A few of my favourite pieces include a black off the shoulder micro-pleat dress, khaki safari-style jumpsuit, white broderie flat espadrilles and black nautical-twist wedges. These are all classic, un-la-di-da pieces you’ll end up rotating and restyling for years to come.
If you need some runway convincing of the minimalist trend, Stella McCartney and J.W.Anderson are the brands look to. They played with shapes and volume while injecting utilitarian colours, and have been the key inspiration for paper-bag waist styles, chilled linen and hessian, pleats and sharp cotton. Hello practicality and versatility.
If you need some more inspiration – Australian brand, Country Road, is one of my all-time favourite brands for clean minimalism. Just flicking through their lookbook makes you instantly want to embrace this pure and streamline lifestyle.
I’m not telling you to give up florals and colour all together, you all know I love them! I’m simply saying practical pieces are fabulous additions to you wardrobe. They’re a winner in the versatility books and I promise, you’ll continue to wear them for years to come.
